Year End Campaign: Osteoporosis Equipment

As we age, we often lose bone more quickly than we can replace it. Bone loss can lead to a disorder called osteoporosis, defined as reduced bone mass and poor bone quality. The disorder makes bones weak and prone to fracture. Each year in the United States, osteoporosis leads to approximately 2 million fractures.

Fractures of the spine and hip can lead to chronic pain, deformity, depression, disability, and even death. Half of the people who break a hip never regain the ability to walk without assistance, and a quarter need long term care.

Osteoporosis does not cause any symptoms. Most likely, you will not even know you have the condition until you break a bone unexpectedly.

Bone density tests measure how strong your bones are. Health care providers use these tests to both screen for and diagnose osteoporosis. The tests are important, because they can alert you to problems with your bones before you have a fracture.

Last year, we began raising funds for on-site bone density screening equipment at Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center. Thanks to generous donations and matching funds, we are over halfway to reaching our goal and being able to purchase the equipment for our local hospital.

With your help, we are confident we can bring this important testing tool to our community very soon. All donations, large and small, will bring us one step closer. Can we count on you?

2019 Golf Social July 26

The purpose of Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation is to support projects that impact community health and inspire additional community investments in projects that benefit health and wellness opportunities.

Our goals include sustaining and improving health care in the Sanford Canton-Inwood service area; supporting Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center, Sanford Canton and Inwood Clinics and Sanford Hiawatha Heights assisted living, as important community assets. Some of our projects have included an ambulance, radiology and stress testing equipment and a donation that allowed the hospital to remodel and expand to meet community needs. Currently, we are raising funds to provide equipment necessary to offer osteoporosis screening locally.

We also provide financial assistance for the education of future health care professionals through annual scholarships. To date, we have given $36,000 in scholarships to local students. In addition, we offer grants annually to organizations that seek to improve the health and well-being of our community. We have provided over $190,000 in grants to community organizations for projects that benefit youth sports to senior fitness, AED equipment at local churches to quality of life projects for nursing home residents and much, much more.

Each year, we host a golf event to help raise funds to meet these goals. Our event this year will be July 26 at Hiawatha Golf Club. We would be grateful for any support that you can provide. Monetary gifts will be applied directly to our projects. Gift cards, tickets or merchandise are also very much appreciated as prizes. Of course, we
