2021 Scholarship Recipients
The 2021 Health Care of Tomorrow Scholarships have been awarded to Bayleigh Peterson, Emily Miiller, Seth Peterson, Izabel Kreger, Kennedy Kramer, and Shawna Gerber.
Bayleigh Peterson and Emily Miller are 2021 graduates of Alcester-Hudson High School. Peterson plans to attend the University of South Dakota where she will study kinesiology. Miiller will also attend the University of South Dakota to study medical biology.
Seth Peterson and Izabel Kreger are 2021 graduates of Canton High School. Peterson will attend South Dakota State University to study athletic training. Kreger will major in nursing at the University of South Dakota.
Kennedy Kramer and Shawna Gerber are 2021 graduates of West Lyon High School. Kramer will be a nursing student at Northwestern College. Gerber will also study nursing at South Dakota State University: Community College for Sioux Falls.
Since 2012, the Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation has provided $47,000 in scholarships to area students.
2021 Grant Recipients
Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation is pleased to announce $26,686 has been awarded through the Heart of the Community grant program for 2021.
Recipients include The Healing Room, Hiawatha Heights Assisted Living, Inwood Summer Recreation, and the City of Canton.
A $2,500 grant to The Healing Room will be used for start-up equipment and other resources for the new ministry in Inwood. The Healing Room will provide free Christian counseling, the Celebrate Recovery program, and programs for children and families. The Healing Room will also host the Inwood Food Pantry.
Hiawatha Heights Assisted Living will purchase a recumbent cross trainer with a $6,465 grant. The equipment will allow the assisted living residents to participate in safe, effective, and adaptive exercise. Trained therapy staff will supervise and recommend appropriate exercise in an effort to maintain and improve mobility.
Inwood Summer Recreation will use a $3,730 grant to purchase a new scoreboard for the baseball/softball field. The mission of Inwood Summer Recreation is to create recreational opportunities for growth and enhancement while striving to increase the social, cultural, and physical well-being of children.
A $14,000 grant will be applied to the purchase of new playground at Kennedy Park in Canton. The installation of new playground equipment by the City of Canton will increase the physical activity in the community with an overall positive impact on the health and wellness of individuals. Kennedy Park has been a stable in the community for many years.
2020 Scholarship Recipients
The 2020 Health Care of Tomorrow Scholarships have been awarded to Nicole Nelson, Sam Stahl, Shayna Skiles, Lyndsey Funke, Quin Horstman, and Tyler VanDenTop.
Nelson and Stahl are 2020 graduates of Canton High School. Nelson plans to attend Gustavus Adolphus College where she will major in nursing. Stahl will study human biology at South Dakota State University.
Skiles, Funke, and Horstman are 2020 graduates of West Lyon High School. Skiles will attend South Dakota State University to study nursing. Funke will study biology and chemistry at Augustana University. Horstman will attend Colorado Christian University and study pre-med.
VanDenTop is a 2020 graduate of Netherlands Reformed Christian School will pursue a degree in biology at Augustana University.
Since 2012, the Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation has provided $42,000 in scholarships to area students.
2020 Grant Recipients
Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation is pleased to announce $26,808.90 has been awarded through the Heart of the Community grant program for 2020.
Recipients include Canton Senior Center, City of Inwood, Lyon County Conservation Board, Canton Volunteer Fire Department, Inwood Summer Recreation, Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center, and Fellowship Village.
A $2,000 grant to the Canton Senior Citizen Center will be used to offer a fitness program to all adults ages 55 plus. The class is taught by a trained instructor and will assist senior citizens with balance, muscle strength and muscle retention.
The City of Inwood will purchase a rowing machine for the community fitness center with a $965 grant.
Lyon County Conservation Board will use a $4,140.90 grant to purchase AEDs and first aid kits for the new education center at Lake Pahoja.
A $3,750 grant to the Canton Volunteer Fire Department will partially fund the purchase of an inflatable education apparatus. Canton Volunteer Fire Department spends hundreds of hours educating the public about fire prevention. The inflatable will be used to demonstrate safe escape procedures during a home evacuation in the event of a fire.
The Inwood Summer Recreation Program received two grants. First, a grant of $2,500 will help fund youth activities during the summer. Activities include exercise, healthy snacking, arts, and more. Second, updates to the community ball field will be made with a $2,875 grant.
A grant of $5,000 will be used by SMILE, an employee group at Sanford Canton-Inwood, to provide food to children during Christmas break. During the holidays it is especially hard for families to meet nutritional needs because of added expenses and the absence of school lunch. Employees purchase and pack bags of groceries that are distributed through various community organizations in Canton and Inwood.
A second grant of $3,000 was made to Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center to assist patients with unmet needs. Transportation is a social determinant of health in rural communities. Reliable transportation can support access to rural healthcare, decrease inappropriate use of EMS services, and decrease no-show rates. The grant will fund transportation, when needed, to and from appointments for patients who are unable to afford transportation. The grant will also provide for limited medication assistance and other medical needs for low income populations.
Fellowship Village of Inwood will utilize a $2,578 grant to purchase a mechanical lift.

2019 Grant Recipients
Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation is pleased to announce $23,388.96 has been awarded through the Heart of the Community grant program for 2019.
Recipients include City of Canton, Canton Good Samaritan Center, Canton Senior Citizen Center, Kingdom Kids Community Daycare, SMILE, West Lyon Booster Club, and Inwood Summer Recreation Program.
The City of Canton received a $7,500 grant to construct a half basketball court at the South Mini Park in Canton. Currently, there is not an outdoor basketball court in any of the city parks. The half basketball court will provide citizens and guests of all ages a place to shoot around, play a pick-up game, and have a 3-on-3 tournament or practice.
Canton Good Samaritan Center purchased an Eva Support Walker with a $1,800 grant. Sometimes referred to a cardiac walker, the Eva Walker supports a patient’s weight when exercising. It easily adjusts to suit different heights and has padded, molded arm pads with a sculpted forearm cutout to keep the arms from slipping off the pads.

Kingdom Kids Community Daycare will expand their Sensory Play program by utilizing a $1,042 grant to purchase sensory play toys. Sensory play is an activity that stimulates a young child’s senses: touch, smell, taste, sight, and hearing. Providing opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world through sensory play is crucial to brain development.
A grant of $3,500 will be used by SMILE, an employee group at Sanford Canton-Inwood, to provide food to children during Christmas break. The West Lyon Booster Club will purchase fitness equipment with a $3,896.96 grant. The enhanced Wildcat Wellness program will provide both students and community members the opportunity to develop strength, flexibility, coordination, and overall cardiovascular health.
A new program offered by Inwood Summer Recreation will offer daytime activities for kids ages five through completion of 6th grade. A grant of $3,150 will allow the program to offer daily activities such as crafts, exercise and healthy snacks.

2019 Scholarship Recipients

In an effort to support the future of health care, Canton-Inwood Area Health Care Foundation awards scholarships annually to deserving students who are pursuing an education in health care.
The 2019 Health Care of Tomorrow Scholarships have been awarded to Kaitlyn Carlon, Grace Hernes, Mason Tieszen, Erica Meyer, Madysn Grotewold, and Kendra Jensen.
Carlon, Hernes and Tieszen are 2019 graduates of Canton High School. Carlon plans to attend Augustana University and major in biology. Hernes will attend University of South Dakota where she plans to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering. Tieszen will also attend USD and plans to study dental hygiene.
Meyer and Grotewold are 2019 graduates of West Lyon High School. Meyer will attend Minnesota West Community and Technical College and study surgical technology. Grotewold will study nursing at Northwestern College.
Jensen is a 2019 graduate of Alcester-Hudson High School and will pursue a degree in kinesiology at University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.
2018 Grants

Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation is pleased to announce that $31,111 has been awarded through the Heart of the Community grant program for 2018.
Recipients include: Canton Good Samaritan Center, Canton Senior Center, Canton-Inwood Area Youth Organization, Love INC, Sanford Canton-Inwood, City of Inwood, Fellowship Village and Kingdom Kids.
Canton Good Samaritan Center received $5,000 to purchase a Geri Nursing Manikin. The availability of this manikin will enhance the current training program by offering hands-on training and experience for nursing staff. The manikin will be a valuable tool to refresh standard care skills, as well as to better prepare staff for newer care needs that may arise.
A $2,000 grant to the Canton Senior Citizen Center will be used to offer a fitness program to all adults ages 55 plus. The class is taught by a trained instructor and will assist senior citizens with balance, muscle strength and muscle retention.
The Canton-Inwood Area Youth Organization received $976 to purchase equipment for a middle school functional fitness program. The goal of the program, under the direction of Emily Plucker, is to build strength and confidence in middle school students by teaching them how to use fitness equipment.
A grant of $4,000 will be utilized by Love, INC to provide food to children during Christmas break. During the holidays, it is especially hard for families to meet nutritional needs because of added expenses and the absence of school lunch. Children in Canton and Inwood will be eligible to receive a bag of food.
A $1,000 grant will be used to establish a fund for the transportation needs of low-income patients at Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center. Reliable transportation can support access to rural health care, decrease inappropriate use of EMS services and decrease no show rates.
The City of Inwood will apply a $10,000 grant to the expenses associated with installing a 10 -foot wide walking and bike trail in the community. The trail will help promote a healthier lifestyle and improve safety for walkers, joggers and bikers.
Fellowship Village will purchase a Whisper Glide Swing with their $6,500 grant. The swing allows individuals of all abilities the opportunity for a therapeutic experience. The swing is wheelchair accessible.
Kingdom Kids daycare will purchase supplies used to develop fine motor skills with a $1,635 grant. Fine motor skills are those that involve a refined use of the small muscles which control the hand, fingers and thumb. With the development of these skills, a child is able to complete important tasks such as writing, feeding oneself, buttoning and zipping.

2018 Scholarships
In an effort to support the future of health care, Canton-Inwood Area Health Care Foundation awards scholarships annually to deserving students who are pursuing an education in health care.
The 2018 Health Care of Tomorrow Scholarships have been awarded to Cole Hennies, Karoline Klingensmith, Jordyn Kramer, McKenzie Krogmann, Landon Renli and Lauren VandeKamp.
Hennies, Krogmann and Renli are 2018 graduates of Canton High School. Hennies plans to attend Augustana University and major in biology. Krogmann will attend South Dakota State University where she plans to pursue a degree in nursing. Renli plans to study communication science disorders at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
Klingensmith, Kramer and VandeKamp are 2018 graduates of West Lyon High School. Klingensmith will attend Morningside College and study nursing. Kramer will also study nursing at the University of Iowa. VandeKamp plans to attend Creighton University and pursue a pre-medicine degree.

2017 Grants
The Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation is pleased to announce that $20,295 has been awarded through the Heart of the Community grant program for 2017.
Recipients include: Good Samaritan Society, Canton, SD; Kingdom Kids Community Daycare, Inwood, IA; Canton Volunteer Fire Department, Canton Senior Citizens Center, Bethesda Nursing Home, Beresford, SD; and the City of Canton.
“Our board of directors awarded these grants based on the agencies’ ability to promote and advance community health and wellness initiatives,” said Melissa Schutte, CIAHF director.
Canton Good Samaritan Society received $2,000 to be applied to their Stepping Stones walkway project.
A $5,000 grant was awarded to Kingdom Kids for safety related upgrades in the infant room and $1,880 for motor development equipment.
The Canton Volunteer Fire Department will purchase TECGEN protective equipment with their $5,500 grant.
A $2,500 grant to the Canton Senior Citizen Center will be applied to the Senior Fitness program.
Bethesda of Beresford will purchase an EZ Stand. The stand is a mechanical device that assists staff with lifting, transferring and repositioning residents.
The City of Canton plans to apply their $5,000 grant to the construction of new bathrooms at Kennedy Park.

2017 Scholarships

In an effort to support the future of health care, the Canton-Inwood Area Health Care Foundation created a scholarship that will be awarded annually to a deserving student who is pursuing an education in health care.
The 2017 Health Care of Tomorrow Scholarships have been awarded to Jacob Peterson, Josey Poppens, Elizabeth Lasley, Elizabeth Woods, Kaysha Blomgren, Sarah Rath, Heather Moser and Rachel Bauder.
Jacob Peterson, Elizabeth Woods and Sarah Rath are 2017 graduates of Canton High School. Peterson plans to attend the University of Nebraska as a pre-medicine student. Woods plans to major in speech pathology at the University of Mary. Rath plans to enroll in the pre-physical therapy program at Augustana University.
Josey Poppens and Kaysha Blomgren are 2017 graduates of West Lyon High School. Poppens plans to attend South Dakota State University and major in pharmacy. Blomgren will attend Lake Area Technical Institute and enroll in the physical therapist assistant program.
Elizabeth Lasley is a 2016 graduate of Canton High School and is a nursing student at South Dakota State University. Rachel Bauder and Heather Moser are 2016 graduates of West Lyon High School. Bauder is enrolled in the School of Health Sciences at the University of South Dakota and is studying dental hygiene. Moser is a Medical Laboratory Science major at South Dakota State University.
“One of the goals identified by the Foundation Board of Trustees is to provide financial assistance towards the education of future health care professionals through scholarships and grants, “ said Foundation Melissa Schutte. “We are very happy to meet that goal by awarding these qualified recipients with the 2017 Health Care of Tomorrow Scholarships.”
2016 Grant Winners
Seeking to make a positive impact on community health and wellness for the benefit of current residents and future generations, the Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation has awarded $30,000 in grant monies to local agencies.
A $7,500 grant was awarded to the Canton Volunteer Fire Department to purchase self-contained breathing apparatus. Bethesda of Beresford was granted $4,900 to purchase equipment needed for patient efficiency and safety. A grant of $4,000 was given to Love INC to support holiday food purchases for Canton children in need. Another $4,000 was awarded to the City of Canton Recreation Board for repairs at the Kennedy Park ball fields. The Inwood Community Center will purchase fitness equipment with a $3,600 grant. The Canton Senior Fitness program received $2,000. The Hiawatha Healing Garden and the Therapeutic Courtyard Project at Good Samaritan each received $2,000.

2016 Scholarship Winners
The Canton-Inwood Area Health Care Foundation offers scholarships annually to deserving students who are pursuing an education in health care.
The 2016 Health Care of Tomorrow Scholarships were recently awarded to Heather Moser, Damarys Hernandez, Rachel Bauder, Tyra Knoblock, Kristen Jennings, Samuel Peterson and Shania Scheidt. Each received $1,000.
A 2016 graduate of West Lyon High School, Moser plans to pursue a medical laboratory science degree at South Dakota State University.
Another 2016 graduate of West Lyon High School, Hernandez will attend Western Iowa Technical Community College where she will be enrolled in the addictions counseling program.
Fellow West Lyon graduate, Bauder has been accepted into the dental hygiene program at the University of South Dakota.
Knoblock is the final recipient from West Lyon High School. She plans to attend South Dakota State University where she will major in nursing.
A 2016 graduate of Canton High School, Jennings will attend Dakota Wesleyan University and major in nursing.
Peterson, also a 2016 graduate of Canton High School, will attend South Dakota State University. He plans to explore the health care field prior to determining a major.
Scheidt is currently a Biology/Chemistry major at the University of Sioux Falls. She anticipates attending medical school in the future and hopes to work as an orthopedic physician.
According to Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation Director Brendyn Richards, one of the goals identified by the Foundation Board of Trustees is to provide financial assistance towards the education of future health care professionals through scholarships and grants. “We are very happy to meet that goal by awarding these qualified recipients with the 2016 Health Care of Tomorrow Scholarships,” said Richards.
