2020 Grant Recipients Announced
Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation is pleased to announce $26,808.90 has been awarded through the Heart of the Community grant program for 2020.
Recipients include Canton Senior Center, City of Inwood, Lyon County Conservation Board, Canton Volunteer Fire Department, Inwood Summer Recreation, Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center, and Fellowship Village.
A $2,000 grant to the Canton Senior Citizen Center will be used to offer a fitness program to all adults ages 55 plus. The class is taught by a trained instructor and will assist senior citizens with balance, muscle strength and muscle retention.
The City of Inwood will purchase a rowing machine for the community fitness center with a $965 grant.
Lyon County Conservation Board will use a $4,140.90 grant to purchase AEDs and first aid kits for the new education center at Lake Pahoja.
A $3,750 grant to the Canton Volunteer Fire Department will partially fund the purchase of an inflatable education apparatus. Canton Volunteer Fire Department spends hundreds of hours educating the public about fire prevention. The inflatable will be used to demonstrate safe escape procedures during a home evacuation in the event of a fire.
The Inwood Summer Recreation Program received two grants. First, a grant of $2,500 will help fund youth activities during the summer. Activities include exercise, healthy snacking, arts, and more. Second, updates to the community ball field will be made with a $2,875 grant.
A grant of $5,000 will be used by SMILE, an employee group at Sanford Canton-Inwood, to provide food to children during Christmas break. During the holidays it is especially hard for families to meet nutritional needs because of added expenses and the absence of school lunch. Employees purchase and pack bags of groceries that are distributed through various community organizations in Canton and Inwood.
A second grant of $3,000 was made to Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center to assist patients with unmet needs. Transportation is a social determinant of health in rural communities. Reliable transportation can support access to rural healthcare, decrease inappropriate use of EMS services, and decrease no-show rates. The grant will fund transportation, when needed, to and from appointments for patients who are unable to afford transportation. The grant will also provide for limited medication assistance and other medical needs for low income populations.
Fellowship Village of Inwood will utilize a $2,578 grant to purchase a mechanical lift.
Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation was established in 2009 with funds created by the sale of Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital, assisted living and related assets to Sanford Health. The grant program allows the foundation to meet one of its identified goals of supporting projects that impact community health and inspire additional community investments in projects that benefit health and wellness opportunities. Canton-Inwood Area Health Foundation has invested nearly $208,000 in our local communities through the Heart of the Community grant program.
Other goals of the foundation include sustaining and improving health care in the Sanford Canton-Inwood service area; supporting Sanford Canton-Inwood, and providing financial assistance for the education of future health care professionals through scholarships.
